6th Grade Math Topics in New Jersey
New Jersey 6th grade math covers a wide range of topics under the NJ Student Learning Standards for Math. Students move from whole-number operations into ratios, rational numbers, algebraic thinking, and introductory geometry and statistics.
Ratios and Proportional Relationships
Students learn to describe ratios, understand unit rates, and use ratio reasoning to solve real-world problems. These skills build a foundation for proportional reasoning in 7th grade.
The Number System
6th graders extend their number knowledge to include fractions divided by fractions, multi-digit decimal operations, greatest common factor, least common multiple, and negative numbers on the number line and coordinate plane.
Expressions and Equations
Students write and evaluate numerical expressions with exponents, work with variables, apply properties of operations, and solve one-step equations and inequalities. They also explore dependent and independent variables.
Geometry
Topics include finding area of triangles and special quadrilaterals, volume of rectangular prisms with fractional edges, graphing polygons in the coordinate plane, and using nets to find surface area.
Statistics and Probability
Students learn to recognize statistical questions, describe data distributions by center and spread, and display data using dot plots, histograms, and box plots.
