4th Grade Math Topics in New Jersey

New Jersey 4th grade math covers a wide range of topics aligned to the NJ Student Learning Standards for Math. Students work through operations with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, measurement, and geometry. StudyPug has a video lesson and practice set for every one of these standards.

Multiplication and Division

4th graders learn to interpret multiplication as a comparison and solve word problems involving multiplicative reasoning. They multiply up to four-digit numbers by one-digit numbers and multiply two two-digit numbers. Division skills include finding whole-number quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends.

Place Value and Multi-Digit Numbers

Students explore how digits in a multi-digit number represent ten times the value of the same digit one place to its right. They read, write, and round multi-digit whole numbers, and fluently add and subtract using the standard algorithm.

Fractions and Decimals

A major focus of 4th grade is fractions — equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators, and multiplying a fraction by a whole number. Students also connect fractions with denominators of 10 and 100 to decimal notation, and compare decimals to the hundredths place.

Measurement and Data

Students solve word problems involving time, distance, volume, mass, and money. They apply area and perimeter formulas for rectangles and create line plots using fractional measurements.

Geometry

4th grade geometry introduces points, lines, line segments, rays, and angles. Students measure and draw angles using a protractor, classify two-dimensional figures by their properties, and identify lines of symmetry.

Preparing for the NJSLA-M

New Jersey students take the NJSLA-M (New Jersey Student Learning Assessment – Mathematics) in grades 3 through 8. StudyPug's 4th grade content is aligned to every NJ Student Learning Standards topic that appears on this assessment, helping students build the skills and confidence they need.
