New Jersey 2nd Grade Math Topics
New Jersey 2nd grade math covers a wide range of skills that build the foundation for future math success. StudyPug's lessons follow the NJ Student Learning Standards for Math, so every topic your child is learning in school is covered here.
Addition and Subtraction
2nd graders practice adding and subtracting within 20 using mental strategies, and within 100 using place value strategies. Students also solve one- and two-step word problems and add up to four two-digit numbers. These skills prepare students for multi-digit arithmetic in 3rd grade.
Place Value and Number Sense
Students learn that three-digit numbers are made up of hundreds, tens, and ones. They read and write numbers to 1000 in standard form, word form, and expanded form, and compare three-digit numbers using place value reasoning. Skip-counting by 5s, 10s, and 100s within 1000 is also a key skill at this grade.
Measurement and Data
2nd grade introduces measurement using inches, feet, centimeters, and meters. Students estimate and compare lengths, solve word problems involving length, and represent whole numbers on a number line. They also generate measurement data and display it using picture graphs and bar graphs.
Time and Money
Students tell and write time to the nearest five minutes using both analog and digital clocks. Word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies help students apply math to real-life situations.
Geometry
2nd graders recognize and draw shapes with specific attributes, partition rectangles into equal rows and columns of squares, and divide circles and rectangles into equal shares — laying the groundwork for fractions in later grades.
