Nebraska 4th Grade Math: What Students Learn

Nebraska 4th grade math covers a wide range of skills aligned to the Nebraska Mathematics Standards. Students work with multiplication and division, multi-digit whole numbers, fractions, decimals, measurement, and geometry. These skills are tested on the NSCAS in grades 3–8, making 4th grade a critical year for building a strong foundation.

Multiplication and Division

4th graders learn to interpret multiplication equations as comparisons and solve word problems involving multiplicative comparison. They multiply numbers up to four digits by a one-digit number, multiply two two-digit numbers, and find whole-number quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends. StudyPug walks through each type of problem with clear video lessons and guided practice.

Place Value and Number Operations

Students explore how digits in a multi-digit number relate to each other by place value — recognizing that each place is ten times the value of the place to its right. They read, write, and compare multi-digit numbers in standard, word, and expanded form, round to any place, and fluently add and subtract using the standard algorithm.

Fractions and Decimals

4th grade introduces equivalent fractions, comparing fractions with different numerators and denominators, adding fractions, and multiplying a fraction by a whole number. Students also connect fractions with denominators of 10 and 100 to decimal notation and compare decimals to the hundredths place.

  • Equivalent fractions and fraction comparison
  • Adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators
  • Multiplying fractions by whole numbers
  • Decimals to the hundredths place

Measurement and Data

Students solve real-world problems using the four operations with distances, time, liquid volumes, masses, and money. They apply area and perimeter formulas for rectangles and create line plots to display measurement data in fractions of a unit.

Geometry

4th graders draw and identify points, lines, line segments, rays, and angles. They measure angles with a protractor, recognize angle measure as additive, and classify two-dimensional figures by their properties — including parallel lines, perpendicular lines, and lines of symmetry.

StudyPug covers every one of these topics with video lessons and practice problems aligned to the Nebraska Mathematics Standards. Get started today and help your 4th grader build confidence in math.
