North Dakota 3rd Grade Math: What Students Learn
3rd grade math in North Dakota covers a wide range of foundational skills. Students move from basic addition and subtraction into multiplication and division, fractions, measurement, data, area, and geometry — all aligned to the North Dakota Mathematics Content Standards. StudyPug has a video lesson and practice set for every one of these topics.
Multiplication and Division
A large part of 3rd grade math focuses on understanding and using multiplication and division. Students learn to interpret products of whole numbers, use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems, and apply properties of operations. They also work toward fluency — being able to multiply and divide within 100 accurately and efficiently.
- Interpret products and quotients of whole numbers
- Solve multiplication and division word problems
- Apply commutative, associative, and distributive properties
- Fluently multiply and divide within 100
- Identify and complete unknown values in equations
Fractions
3rd graders are introduced to fractions for the first time. They learn what a fraction means, how to place fractions on a number line, and how to compare fractions. StudyPug breaks these concepts down into short, clear video lessons so students can build understanding step by step.
- Understand unit fractions (1/b)
- Represent fractions on a number line
- Explain fraction equivalence
- Compare fractions by reasoning about size
- Partition shapes into equal parts and express as unit fractions
Number and Operations in Base Ten
Students round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100, add and subtract within 1,000 using place value strategies, and multiply one-digit numbers by multiples of 10. These skills build the number sense students need for 4th grade math.
Measurement and Data
3rd grade measurement topics include telling time to the nearest minute, measuring liquid volumes and masses, drawing picture graphs and bar graphs, and generating measurement data using rulers. These real-world skills connect math to everyday life.
- Tell and write time to the nearest minute
- Measure and estimate liquid volumes and masses
- Draw scaled picture graphs and bar graphs
- Measure lengths to halves and fourths of an inch
Geometry and Area
Students explore area as an attribute of shapes, count unit squares to measure area, and connect area to multiplication and addition. They also solve perimeter problems and identify shared attributes of shapes.
NDSA Math Testing in North Dakota
North Dakota administers the NDSA (North Dakota State Assessment) in math for grades 3–8 and grade 11. 3rd grade is the first year students are tested. StudyPug covers every topic tested at the 3rd grade level so students can feel prepared and confident on test day.
