2nd Grade Math Topics in North Dakota
North Dakota 2nd grade math covers a wide range of topics that build essential number sense and problem-solving skills. Students work with addition and subtraction, place value up to 1000, measurement, data, and geometry — all aligned to the North Dakota Mathematics Content Standards.
Addition and Subtraction
2nd graders in North Dakota practice adding and subtracting within 100 and 1000. They solve one- and two-step word problems, add up to four two-digit numbers, and learn to mentally add or subtract 10 or 100 from any number between 100 and 900. These skills lay the groundwork for multiplication and division in later grades.
Place Value
Students learn that a three-digit number represents hundreds, tens, and ones. They read and write numbers to 1000 in standard form, word form, and expanded form, and compare three-digit numbers using greater than, less than, and equal to symbols.
Measurement and Data
2nd graders measure lengths using inches, feet, centimeters, and meters. They estimate lengths, compare lengths of objects, and solve word problems involving measurement. Students also tell time to the nearest five minutes and solve problems with coins and dollar bills.
Geometry
Students recognize and draw shapes based on their attributes. They partition rectangles into rows and columns of equal squares and divide circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares — an early introduction to fractions.
