Mississippi 2nd Grade Math: What Students Learn

In 2nd grade, Mississippi students build on their 1st grade skills and take on bigger math challenges. The year covers a wide range of topics — from adding and subtracting numbers up to 1000 to telling time, counting money, and understanding basic geometry. Every topic your child studies in class is covered on StudyPug, aligned to MS College Career Ready Standards.

Addition and Subtraction

A big part of 2nd grade math is getting comfortable with addition and subtraction. Students learn to:

  • Add and subtract within 20 fluently using mental strategies
  • Solve one- and two-step word problems using addition and subtraction within 100
  • Add up to four two-digit numbers
  • Add and subtract within 1000 using models, drawings, and place value strategies
  • Mentally add or subtract 10 or 100 from any number between 100 and 900

StudyPug breaks each of these skills into short, clear video lessons with practice problems so students can build speed and confidence step by step.

Place Value and Number Sense

Understanding place value is one of the most important skills in 2nd grade. Students learn that a three-digit number has hundreds, tens, and ones. They also practice:

  • Reading and writing numbers to 1000 in standard form, word form, and expanded form
  • Comparing three-digit numbers using greater than, less than, and equal to
  • Skip-counting by 5s, 10s, and 100s up to 1000
  • Determining whether a group of objects is odd or even

Measurement and Data

2nd graders in Mississippi start measuring the world around them. They select the right tools to measure length in inches, feet, centimeters, and meters. They also learn to estimate lengths and compare the lengths of two objects. Data skills include generating measurement data and creating picture graphs and bar graphs with up to four categories.

Time and Money

Students learn to tell and write time to the nearest five minutes using both analog and digital clocks. They also solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies — practical skills they use every day.

Geometry

In geometry, 2nd graders recognize and draw shapes with specific attributes. They partition rectangles into rows and columns of equal squares to find the total. They also divide circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares and describe those shares as halves, thirds, and fourths.
