Michigan 4th Grade Social Studies: What Students Learn

In 4th grade, Michigan students take a deep dive into their home state. The curriculum follows the Michigan Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCE) and covers four main strands: history, geography, civics, and economics. By the end of the year, students have a well-rounded understanding of how Michigan came to be and how it functions today.

History

Students learn about Michigan's early history, including the cultures of Native American peoples such as the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi. They trace the arrival of European explorers and settlers, the fur trade era, Michigan's path to statehood, and key events in the state's development through the 19th and 20th centuries.

Geography

Michigan's unique geography — two peninsulas, the Great Lakes, and diverse natural regions — is a major focus. Students use maps and geographic tools to identify landforms, bodies of water, and regional characteristics. They also explore how geography has shaped where people live and how communities have grown across the state.

Civics and Government

4th graders learn how Michigan's government is organized at the local, state, and federal levels. Topics include the roles of elected officials, the importance of civic participation, and the rights and responsibilities of Michigan citizens. Students also study the Michigan Constitution and how laws are made.

Economics

The economics strand introduces students to concepts like natural resources, trade, supply and demand, and how Michigan's economy has changed over time — from fur trading and lumber to manufacturing and agriculture. Students connect economic ideas to real examples from Michigan's history and present day.
