Michigan 6th Grade ELA — What Students Learn

In 6th grade, Michigan students dive deeper into reading and writing skills that form the foundation for middle school success. Aligned to the Michigan K-12 Standards for English Language Arts, the curriculum focuses on analyzing both literary and informational texts, crafting well-structured arguments, and refining grammar and language use.

Reading and Text Analysis

6th graders in Michigan are expected to read closely and support their ideas with evidence from the text. They compare fiction and nonfiction, identify themes and central ideas, and study how authors use word choice and structure to build meaning. StudyPug's lessons walk through these skills with clear explanations and worked examples.

Writing Skills in 6th Grade

Michigan's 6th grade ELA standards require students to write arguments, informative essays, and narratives. StudyPug covers each writing type with guided practice so students understand how to organize ideas, use evidence, and revise their work.

Grammar, Vocabulary, and Language Conventions

Students in 6th grade also strengthen their understanding of grammar rules, sentence structure, and vocabulary in context. These skills support both reading comprehension and writing quality across all subject areas.

  • Reading literature and informational texts
  • Argumentative and informative writing
  • Grammar and language conventions
  • Vocabulary acquisition and word study
  • Speaking, listening, and collaboration skills

M-STEP ELA Assessment in Michigan

Michigan 6th graders take the M-STEP ELA assessment, which tests reading comprehension and writing skills tied to the Michigan K-12 Standards. StudyPug's practice exercises help students build the skills assessed on this test throughout the school year.
