Maine 3rd Grade Math Topics
Maine 3rd grade math covers a wide range of foundational skills. StudyPug has video lessons and practice for every topic your child will encounter in the classroom, all aligned to Maine Learning Results Math standards.
Multiplication and Division
Students learn to interpret products of whole numbers and understand division as an unknown-factor problem. They practice using multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems, and work toward fluency with all multiplication and division facts. Properties of operations — like the commutative and distributive properties — help students multiply and divide more efficiently.
Fractions
3rd graders are introduced to fractions as numbers. They learn to understand a fraction as one part of a whole partitioned into equal parts, place fractions on a number line, and compare fractions by reasoning about their size. Equivalent fractions in special cases are also explored.
Place Value and Operations
Students use place value understanding to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100. They fluently add and subtract within 1,000 using place-value strategies and multiply one-digit numbers by multiples of 10.
Measurement and Data
Maine 3rd graders tell and write time to the nearest minute, measure liquid volumes and masses, and generate measurement data using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch. They also draw scaled picture graphs and bar graphs to represent data sets.
Geometry and Area
Students recognize area as an attribute of plane figures, measure area by counting unit squares, and relate area to multiplication and addition. They solve real-world problems involving perimeters of polygons and explore how shapes in different categories can share attributes.
