2nd Grade Math Topics in Maine
Maine 2nd grade math covers a wide range of foundational skills. Students work on addition and subtraction with numbers up to 1000, develop place value understanding with hundreds, tens, and ones, and begin exploring measurement, time, money, and basic geometry. Every topic on StudyPug is aligned to Maine Learning Results Math standards.
Addition and Subtraction
Second graders in Maine practice adding and subtracting within 100 and 1000. They solve one- and two-step word problems, add up to four two-digit numbers, and learn mental math strategies for adding or subtracting 10 or 100 from any number. StudyPug has video lessons and practice problems for every one of these skills.
Place Value
Students learn that three-digit numbers are made up of hundreds, tens, and ones. They read and write numbers to 1000 in standard form, word form, and expanded form, and compare three-digit numbers using greater than and less than. These concepts prepare Maine students for multiplication and division in later grades.
Measurement and Data
Maine 2nd graders measure lengths using inches, feet, centimeters, and meters. They estimate lengths, compare objects, and solve word problems involving measurement. Students also generate data by measuring objects and represent results in picture graphs and bar graphs.
Time and Money
Students tell and write time to the nearest five minutes using analog and digital clocks. They also solve word problems using dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies — practical skills that connect math to everyday life.
Geometry
Second graders recognize and draw shapes with specific attributes, partition rectangles into equal squares, and divide circles and rectangles into equal shares. These skills build early fraction understanding that students will expand in 3rd grade.
