About High School Maryland Geometry
Maryland follows the Maryland College Career Ready Standards, which organize high school Geometry around congruence, similarity, right triangle trigonometry, circles, coordinate geometry, and modeling with geometry. Students work through rigid motions and transformations, congruence and similarity proofs, trigonometric ratios, circle relationships, conic sections, and volume formulas. - Transformations and congruence: Definitions of rotations, reflections, and translations; rigid motions; congruence criteria ASA, SAS, and SSS; proofs about lines, angles, triangles, and parallelograms; and formal geometric constructions.
- Similarity and right triangle trigonometry: Dilations and similarity transformations; AA similarity criterion; triangle similarity proofs; trigonometric ratios for acute angles; sine and cosine of complementary angles; and the Pythagorean Theorem applied to real-world problems.
- Circles: Inscribed angles, radii, and chords; inscribed and circumscribed circles of a triangle; tangent lines; arc length; radian measure; and the area of a sector.
- Coordinate geometry: Equations of circles and parabolas; equations of ellipses and hyperbolas; slope criteria for parallel and perpendicular lines; partitioning a directed line segment; and computing perimeters and areas using coordinates.
- Modeling with geometry: Volume formulas for cylinders, pyramids, cones, and spheres; cross-sections of 3D objects; density based on area and volume; and applying geometric methods to design problems.
