Louisiana 6th Grade Math: Topics and Skills
6th grade math in Louisiana follows the Louisiana Student Standards Math and covers a wide range of topics that prepare students for middle school algebra and beyond. Ratios, Rates, and Proportional Reasoning
Students learn to understand and use ratios to describe relationships between two quantities. They work with unit rates, use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world problems, and build the foundation for proportional thinking in 7th grade.
Number Operations: Fractions, Decimals, and Whole Numbers
6th graders fluently divide fractions by fractions, divide multi-digit whole numbers, and perform all four operations with multi-digit decimals. They also find the greatest common factor and least common multiple of whole numbers.
The Number System: Integers and Rational Numbers
- Understand positive and negative numbers and how they describe real-world situations
- Place rational numbers on a number line and coordinate plane

Expressions and Equations
Students write and evaluate numerical expressions with whole-number exponents, write and evaluate algebraic expressions, and apply properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions. They solve one-step equations and inequalities and explore dependent and independent variables.
Geometry
6th grade geometry covers area of triangles, quadrilaterals, and polygons, volume of rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths, drawing polygons in the coordinate plane, and finding surface area using nets.
Statistics and Data
Students learn to ask and answer statistical questions, describe data distributions by center and spread, and display data in dot plots, histograms, and box plots. They summarize numerical data sets in context.
