Kentucky 2nd Grade Math Topics and Standards

Kentucky 2nd grade math follows the Kentucky Academic Standards Math, covering a wide range of number, measurement, and geometry skills. StudyPug provides video lessons and practice problems for every topic so students can get help with homework or get ahead in class.

Addition and Subtraction

2nd graders in Kentucky develop strong addition and subtraction skills. They learn to:

  • Add and subtract within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems
  • Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies
  • Add up to four two-digit numbers using place value strategies
  • Add and subtract within 1000 using models and drawings
  • Mentally add or subtract 10 or 100 from numbers between 100 and 900

Place Value and Number Sense

Students build a deep understanding of three-digit numbers and how hundreds, tens, and ones work together. Topics include reading and writing numbers to 1000, skip-counting by 5s, 10s, and 100s, and comparing three-digit numbers.

Measurement and Data

Kentucky 2nd graders learn to measure length using appropriate tools, estimate lengths in inches, feet, centimeters, and meters, and solve word problems involving lengths. They also practice telling time to the nearest five minutes and solving money problems with dollars, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies.

Geometry

Students recognize and draw shapes with specified attributes, partition rectangles into equal rows and columns, and divide circles and rectangles into equal shares — laying the groundwork for fractions in later grades.

StudyPug covers all of these topics with step-by-step video lessons and practice problems. Get started today and help your child build confidence in every area of 2nd grade math.
