4th Grade ELA in Kentucky

Kentucky 4th grade ELA students are expected to read complex fiction and nonfiction texts, identify main ideas, cite evidence from the text, and write clearly in multiple formats. These skills are assessed through the Kentucky Student Assessment (KSA), which tests ELA in grades 3 through 8. Building a strong foundation in 4th grade sets students up for success in upper elementary and middle school.

What Kentucky 4th Graders Learn in ELA

  • Reading literature: character, setting, theme, and point of view
  • Reading informational text: main idea, key details, and text structure
  • Writing opinion, informational, and narrative pieces
  • Grammar and language conventions: sentences, punctuation, and usage
  • Vocabulary: context clues, prefixes, suffixes, and root words
  • Speaking, listening, and research skills

Preparing for the KSA in 4th Grade

While the Kentucky Student Assessment (KSA) is a formal test given in grades 3–8, 4th grade is a critical year for reinforcing foundational literacy skills. Students who practice reading closely and writing clearly in 4th grade are better prepared for the demands of the KSA in later grades. StudyPug's aligned content helps students stay on track with what Kentucky schools expect.
