Indiana 7th Grade ELA: What Students Learn

In 7th grade, Indiana students deepen their English Language Arts skills across reading, writing, speaking, and language. Aligned to Indiana Academic Standards for English/Language Arts, the curriculum challenges students to think critically about complex texts and express ideas clearly in writing.

Reading and Literary Analysis

7th grade readers in Indiana work with both literary and informational texts. Students learn to identify themes, analyze character development, compare author perspectives, and cite textual evidence to support their ideas. These skills are foundational for success on the ILEARN ELA assessment and in future English courses.

  • Analyzing theme and central idea in fiction and nonfiction
  • Comparing texts across genres and formats
  • Identifying author's purpose and point of view
  • Using evidence from the text to support written responses

Writing Skills in 7th Grade

Indiana 7th graders practice three main types of writing: argumentative, informative/explanatory, and narrative. Students learn to organize ideas, use transitions, develop claims with evidence, and revise their work for clarity and style.

  • Writing clear arguments with supporting evidence
  • Structuring informational essays with an introduction, body, and conclusion
  • Crafting narrative writing with descriptive detail
  • Editing and revising for grammar, punctuation, and word choice

Grammar, Vocabulary, and Language

Strong grammar and vocabulary skills support all reading and writing tasks. In 7th grade, students expand their understanding of sentence structure, punctuation rules, figurative language, and context clues for new vocabulary words.
