Indiana 8th Grade ELA — What Students Learn

Indiana 8th graders study a wide range of English skills under the Indiana Academic Standards for English Language Arts. By the end of the year, students are expected to read complex literary and informational texts, write well-structured arguments and narratives, and apply grammar rules in their own writing.

Reading — Literary and Informational Texts

Students analyze how authors develop themes, characters, and point of view in fiction and poetry. For informational texts, they evaluate arguments, identify evidence, and compare how different authors present the same topic. These reading skills are directly assessed on Indiana's ILEARN test in Grade 8.

Writing — Argument, Narrative, and Informational

8th grade writing focuses on building strong arguments supported by evidence from texts. Students also write informational pieces and personal narratives. StudyPug's guided lessons walk through each writing type with clear examples and practice exercises.

Grammar and Language

  • Correct use of verbals — gerunds, participles, and infinitives
  • Active vs. passive voice
  • Mood in verbs (indicative, imperative, conditional, subjunctive)
  • Spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure

Vocabulary

Students use context clues, Greek and Latin roots, and reference materials to determine word meaning. Strong vocabulary supports both reading comprehension and written expression.
