Illinois 10th grade English follows the Illinois Learning Standards for ELA, which guide what students read, write, and discuss throughout the school year. At this level, students move beyond basic reading comprehension and begin engaging with complex literary and informational texts, developing the analytical and writing skills they'll need in 11th and 12th grade.

Key Skills in 10th Grade ELA

  • Analyzing themes, structure, and author's craft in literary texts
  • Reading and evaluating informational and argumentative texts
  • Writing well-structured argumentative and explanatory essays
  • Building vocabulary through context and word study
  • Applying grammar and conventions in writing
  • Conducting research and citing sources accurately

How StudyPug Supports Illinois 10th Graders

StudyPug provides lessons and practice exercises for every major 10th grade ELA skill. Each lesson breaks down a concept into clear, manageable steps so students can understand it on their own — without waiting for the next class. Whether a student is struggling with a writing assignment or preparing for a class discussion on a novel, StudyPug has the support they need.

All content is aligned to Illinois Learning Standards for ELA, so students are always working on the same skills their teacher is covering in school. Parents can track progress and students can move at their own pace — spending more time on the topics they find challenging.

Preparing for Illinois High School Assessments

While Illinois does not administer a state ELA test specifically for 10th graders, students in 11th grade take the SAT as part of Illinois' state assessment program. Strong 10th grade ELA skills — especially in reading comprehension, writing, and evidence-based analysis — directly support performance on the SAT. StudyPug helps Illinois students build those skills steadily throughout 10th grade.
