6th Grade ELA in Illinois

Illinois 6th graders are expected to read closely, write clearly, and analyze texts across a range of genres. The Illinois Learning Standards for English Language Arts guide what students learn in Grade 6, building the skills they'll need for middle school and beyond.

Reading and Literature

In 6th grade, Illinois students read both literary and informational texts. They practice identifying main ideas, analyzing author's purpose, and comparing how different texts approach the same topic. Students also study story elements like theme, character development, and point of view.

Writing Skills

Grade 6 writing focuses on three main types: argumentative, informational, and narrative. Students learn how to organize their ideas, use evidence to support claims, and revise their work for clarity and style. These writing skills are directly assessed on the Illinois IAR.

Grammar and Vocabulary

6th grade grammar covers parts of speech, sentence structure, punctuation, and usage. Vocabulary instruction helps students understand word relationships, context clues, and figurative language. These foundational skills support both reading comprehension and writing quality.

Preparing for the IAR

Illinois students in Grade 6 take the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) in English Language Arts. The test covers reading literary and informational texts, writing in response to sources, and demonstrating grammar and language skills. StudyPug's lessons and practice problems target every skill area included in the IAR.

  • Reading literary texts: fiction, poetry, and drama
  • Reading informational texts: articles, essays, and primary sources
  • Writing arguments and explanations using textual evidence
  • Grammar, usage, and mechanics
  • Vocabulary acquisition and use
