About High School Hawaii Calculus
Hawaii high school math follows the Hawaii Content Standards, and Calculus builds on those foundations with a structured progression through limits, derivatives, and integrals. Students work through evaluating limits and continuity, mastering differentiation rules including power, product, quotient, chain, and implicit differentiation, and then applying derivatives to optimization, curve sketching, and related rates. The second half of the course covers antiderivatives, Riemann sums, the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, and integration techniques used to find area and solve motion problems. - Limits and Continuity: Understand limits graphically and numerically, evaluate limits using substitution, determine continuity at a point, identify types of discontinuities, and find limits at infinity to describe end behavior.
- Differentiation: Understand the derivative as rate of change and slope of the tangent line; apply power, product, quotient, and chain rules; differentiate trigonometric, exponential, and logarithmic functions; and find derivatives of implicitly defined functions.
- Applications of Derivatives: Find equations of tangent lines and use linear approximation, identify critical points and local extrema, solve optimization problems, analyze increasing and decreasing behavior and concavity, sketch curves, solve related rates problems, and apply derivatives to velocity and acceleration.
- Integration: Find antiderivatives of basic functions using initial conditions, approximate definite integrals with Riemann sums, apply the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, evaluate integrals using substitution, and find area under and between curves.
- Applications of Integration: Use integrals to find displacement and distance from velocity functions and calculate the average value of a function over an interval.
