6th Grade Math Topics in Hawaii

Ratios and Proportional Relationships
Students learn to understand ratios and unit rates, use rate language, and apply ratio reasoning to solve real-world problems. These skills are essential for 7th grade proportional relationships and everyday math situations.
The Number System
6th grade introduces integers and negative numbers for the first time. Students extend the number line to include negative coordinates, work with rational numbers, understand absolute value, and graph points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane.
Fractions and Decimals
Students divide fractions by fractions, fluently divide multi-digit numbers, and perform all four operations with multi-digit decimals. They also find the greatest common factor and least common multiple of whole numbers.
Expressions and Equations
This is where early algebra begins. Students write and evaluate numerical expressions with exponents, use variables, apply properties of operations, and solve one-step equations and inequalities. They also explore dependent and independent variables.
Geometry
Students find the area of triangles, quadrilaterals, and polygons, calculate the volume of rectangular prisms with fractional edges, use coordinates to find side lengths, and work with nets to find surface area.
Statistics and Probability
Students learn what makes a statistical question, how to describe data distributions, and how to display data in dot plots, histograms, and box plots. They calculate measures of center and variation and summarize data sets in context.
