4th Grade Math Topics in Hawaii
Hawaii's 4th grade math curriculum follows the Hawaii Common Core Standards Math, covering a wide range of skills that build a strong foundation for upper elementary and middle school math. StudyPug breaks every standard into clear video lessons with practice problems so students can learn at their own pace.
Multiplication and Division
4th graders in Hawaii learn to interpret multiplication equations as comparisons and use multiplication and division to solve word problems. They also practice multiplying up to four-digit numbers by one-digit numbers and multiplying two two-digit numbers, along with finding whole-number quotients with up to four-digit dividends.
Place Value and Number Operations
Students explore how a digit in one place represents ten times the digit to its right. They read and write multi-digit whole numbers in standard form, word form, and expanded form, and use place value to round numbers. Fluency with adding and subtracting multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm is also a key skill at this grade level.
Fractions and Decimals
A major focus of 4th grade math is fractions. Students learn to find equivalent fractions, compare fractions with different numerators and denominators, add fractions with the same denominator, and begin multiplying fractions by whole numbers. They also connect fractions to decimals, expressing fractions with denominators of 10 or 100 in decimal notation and comparing decimals to the hundredths place.
Measurement and Data
Hawaii 4th graders solve word problems involving distances, time intervals, liquid volumes, masses, and money. They apply area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real-world problems and create line plots to display measurement data in fractions of a unit.
Geometry
Students are introduced to points, lines, line segments, rays, and different types of angles including right, acute, and obtuse. They learn to measure angles with a protractor, recognize that angle measures are additive, classify two-dimensional figures by their properties, and identify lines of symmetry.
Preparing for the SBAC in Hawaii
Hawaii administers the SBAC (Smarter Balanced) assessment in grades 3–8. StudyPug's 4th grade math content is aligned to Hawaii Common Core Standards Math so students are practicing exactly the skills assessed on the SBAC. Regular practice with StudyPug helps build the fluency and problem-solving confidence students need on test day.
