3rd Grade Math Topics in Hawaii
Hawaii 3rd grade math covers a wide range of foundational topics that set students up for success in later grades. From multiplication and division to fractions and geometry, every concept your child learns this year builds toward 4th grade and beyond.
Multiplication and Division
Students learn to interpret products and quotients of whole numbers, solve word problems using multiplication and division within 100, and identify unknown values in equations. They also explore properties of operations and develop fluency with facts up to 100 — a core skill tested on the Hawaii SBAC.
Fractions
3rd grade introduces fractions as numbers on a number line. Students learn to recognize unit fractions, compare fractions by reasoning about size, and explain equivalence. These skills are essential for 4th grade fraction work.
Measurement and Data
Students tell time to the nearest minute, measure liquid volumes and masses, and generate measurement data using rulers marked in halves and fourths of an inch. They also draw scaled picture graphs and bar graphs to represent data sets.
Area and Perimeter
Students recognize area as an attribute of plane figures, count unit squares, and relate area to multiplication and addition. They also solve real-world problems involving the perimeters of polygons.
Geometry
Students explore how shapes in different categories can share attributes and learn to partition shapes into equal parts, expressing each part as a unit fraction of the whole.
