6th Grade ELA in Hawaii

Hawaii 6th grade English Language Arts follows the Hawaii Common Core Standards for English Language Arts. Students in 6th grade are expected to read complex literary and informational texts, cite textual evidence, write arguments and narratives, and build academic vocabulary. These skills form the foundation for success in middle school and beyond.

Reading and Writing Skills Covered

At the 6th grade level, Hawaii students focus on analyzing how authors develop themes and central ideas, understanding point of view, and comparing texts across genres. Writing instruction includes argument writing with supporting evidence, informative writing, and narrative writing with descriptive detail.

  • Citing textual evidence from literary and informational texts
  • Determining theme or central idea and how it develops
  • Analyzing how an author's word choices shape meaning and tone
  • Writing arguments supported by relevant evidence
  • Building vocabulary through context clues and word relationships
