4th Grade ELA in Hawaii

Hawaii 4th grade English covers a wide range of skills that set students up for success in middle school and beyond. Students learn to read and analyze both literary and informational texts, identify main ideas and supporting details, and understand how authors use language. Writing instruction focuses on organizing ideas clearly and using proper grammar and punctuation.

Reading and Comprehension Skills

4th graders in Hawaii work on understanding stories, poems, and nonfiction passages. They practice identifying themes, comparing texts, and explaining how details support main ideas. These skills are assessed on Hawaii's Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBAC) in grade 4.

Writing and Grammar

Students learn to write opinion pieces, informational paragraphs, and narratives. Grammar topics include parts of speech, sentence structure, and punctuation. StudyPug breaks each skill into clear lessons with practice exercises so students can build confidence step by step.

Vocabulary Development

4th grade ELA also focuses on expanding vocabulary. Students learn to use context clues, understand word relationships, and recognize figurative language. These skills support stronger reading comprehension across all subjects.

  • Reading comprehension for literary and informational texts
  • Writing organization and paragraph structure
  • Grammar, punctuation, and sentence variety
  • Vocabulary strategies including context clues
  • Preparation for Hawaii's SBAC ELA assessment
