14.1 Reading linear relation graphs

Reading Linear Relation Graphs

Read a linear graph by finding where it crosses the y-axis and how steeply it rises, then write y = mx + b.

What You'll Learn

The y-intercept is where the line crosses the y-axis, at x = 0.
The slope is the rise over run between any two points on the line.
Move right from the y-intercept and measure how far the line rises.
Combine the y-intercept (b) and slope (m) to write y = mx + b.
This reverses building a table of values or graph from an equation.

What You'll Practice

1

Estimating values from graphs by reading x and y coordinates

2

Solving word problems about profit, distance, and wages using graphs

3

Creating linear equations and substituting values to find unknowns

4

Plotting data points from tables and drawing best-fit lines

Why This Matters

Reading linear graphs is essential for analyzing trends in science, business, and everyday situations like budgeting or tracking progress. This skill helps you visualize relationships between variables and solve real-world problems faster than working with numbers alone.
