Florida 4th Grade Math: What Students Learn

Florida 4th grade math covers a wide range of topics under the B.E.S.T. Standards for Mathematics. Students build on what they learned in 3rd grade and develop stronger number sense, fraction skills, and problem-solving strategies. Here is a breakdown of the major areas covered.

Place Value and Number Sense

Students learn to read and write multi-digit numbers in standard form, expanded form, and word form. They explore how a digit's value changes when it moves one place to the left or right, and they round whole numbers to the nearest 10, 100, or 1,000. Comparing and ordering multi-digit whole numbers and decimals to the hundredths is also a key skill at this grade level.

Multiplication and Division

4th graders recall multiplication facts with factors up to 12 and related division facts. They multiply two whole numbers up to three digits by two digits, divide whole numbers up to four digits by a one-digit number, and use estimation and rounding to check their work. These skills lay the foundation for more advanced operations in 5th grade.

Fractions and Decimals

  • Model and express fractions, mixed numbers, and fractions greater than one
  • Use decimal notation for fractions with denominators of 10 or 100
  • Identify and generate equivalent fractions
  • Plot, order, and compare fractions with different numerators and denominators
  • Add and subtract fractions with like denominators
  • Multiply a fraction by a whole number

Students also explore adding fractions with unlike denominators and connect decimal and fraction representations to real-world problems.

Algebraic Thinking and Patterns

Students determine whether equations involving all four operations are true or false. They generate numerical patterns from a given rule and find factor pairs for whole numbers from 0 to 144. Identifying prime and composite numbers is also introduced at this grade.

Measurement and Data

4th graders select and use appropriate tools to measure objects, convert within a single system of measurement, and solve two-step problems involving distance and time. They collect and represent data using tables, line plots, and bar graphs, and determine the mode, median, and range of a data set.

Geometry

Students draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles, and parallel and perpendicular lines. They sort quadrilaterals based on their sides and angles and recognize line symmetry in two-dimensional figures. Solving perimeter and area problems — including rectangles with the same area but different perimeters — rounds out the geometry strand.
