2nd Grade Math Topics in Delaware

Delaware 2nd grade math covers a wide range of foundational skills that students need before moving into 3rd grade. The Delaware Math Content Standards for 2nd grade focus on four main areas: operations and algebraic thinking, number and operations in base ten, measurement and data, and geometry.

Addition and Subtraction

Students practice adding and subtracting within 20 using mental strategies, and extend those skills to solving one- and two-step word problems within 100. They also learn to add and subtract within 1000 using place value strategies and concrete models. Mentally adding or subtracting 10 or 100 from any number between 100 and 900 is a key skill at this grade.

  • Add and subtract fluently within 20
  • Solve word problems with addition and subtraction within 100
  • Add up to four two-digit numbers
  • Add and subtract within 1000 using drawings or models

Place Value and Number Sense

2nd graders learn that three-digit numbers represent hundreds, tens, and ones. They read and write numbers to 1000 in standard form, word form, and expanded form, and compare three-digit numbers using greater than, less than, and equal to symbols. Skip-counting by 5s, 10s, and 100s within 1000 is also introduced at this level.

Measurement and Data

Students measure lengths using rulers and other tools, estimate lengths in inches, feet, centimeters, and meters, and compare the lengths of two objects. They represent data with picture graphs and bar graphs, and apply measurement skills to word problems. Telling time to the nearest five minutes and solving money problems with coins and dollar bills round out the measurement strand.

Geometry

2nd grade geometry introduces students to recognizing and drawing shapes based on their attributes. Students partition rectangles and circles into equal shares — halves, thirds, and fourths — building early foundations for fractions in 3rd grade.
