Colorado 3rd Grade ELA: What Students Learn

In 3rd grade, Colorado students make a major shift in their English development. They move from basic reading skills toward deeper comprehension, structured writing, and an expanding vocabulary. The Colorado Academic Standards set clear expectations for what students should know and be able to do by the end of the year.

Reading Comprehension in 3rd Grade

Colorado 3rd graders are expected to read and understand both fiction and nonfiction texts. Key skills include identifying the main idea, understanding story structure, comparing characters, and using context clues to figure out unfamiliar words. StudyPug provides guided lessons and practice exercises for each of these reading skills.

Writing Skills for 3rd Graders

Writing in 3rd grade covers opinion writing, informational writing, and narrative writing. Students learn how to organize their ideas, write complete sentences, and begin using transitions. Grammar and mechanics — including capitalization, punctuation, and correct verb tense — are also key focus areas at this level.

Grammar and Vocabulary

Colorado 3rd grade ELA includes grammar topics such as:

  • Nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs
  • Subject-verb agreement
  • Punctuation in sentences
  • Spelling patterns and commonly confused words

Vocabulary development helps students understand academic and domain-specific words they will encounter across all subjects.

How StudyPug Supports Colorado 3rd Grade ELA
