Arkansas Algebra I: What Students Learn

Algebra I is the gateway to all high school mathematics in Arkansas. Aligned to Arkansas Mathematics Standards, this course builds skills that appear on the ACT and future math courses like Geometry and Algebra II.

Equations and Inequalities

Students learn to create and solve equations and inequalities in one variable, including those arising from linear, quadratic, rational, and exponential functions. They also learn to rearrange formulas and justify each step in the solving process using properties of equality.

Systems of Equations and Inequalities

Arkansas Algebra I students solve systems of linear equations exactly and approximately using graphs and substitution. They graph linear inequalities as half-planes and interpret solution sets in real-world modeling contexts.

Functions and Their Graphs

Students develop a deep understanding of functions — including domain, range, function notation, and key features of graphs. They compare linear and exponential functions, write arithmetic and geometric sequences, and interpret rate of change from tables and graphs.

Polynomials and Expressions

Quadratic Equations

Solving quadratic equations in one variable is a major focus of Arkansas Algebra I. Students use factoring, completing the square, and the quadratic formula. They also solve systems consisting of one linear and one quadratic equation both algebraically and graphically.

Exponential Functions and Sequences

Students distinguish linear from exponential growth, construct exponential functions from tables and graphs, and interpret parameters in context. They observe that exponential growth eventually exceeds polynomial growth using graphs and tables.

Statistics and Data Analysis

The course closes with data analysis: dot plots, histograms, box plots, scatter plots, and linear models. Students interpret slope and intercept in context, compute correlation coefficients using technology, and understand the difference between correlation and causation.
