Alaska Kindergarten Math Topics

Alaska Kindergarten math covers a wide range of foundational skills that prepare students for success in Grade 1 and beyond. StudyPug's video lessons and practice problems follow the Alaska Mathematics Standards so students are always learning the right material.

Counting and Cardinality

Students learn to count to 100 by ones and tens, count forward from any number, and write numerals from 0 to 20. A key focus is understanding that each number represents a specific quantity — connecting counting to cardinality. Students also answer "how many?" questions for groups of up to 20 objects.

Comparing Numbers

Kindergartners learn to identify whether one group has more, fewer, or the same number of objects as another. They also compare two written numerals between 1 and 10 to determine which is greater or less.

Addition and Subtraction

Students are introduced to addition and subtraction using objects, fingers, drawings, and equations. They solve word problems and add or subtract within 10, decompose numbers into pairs, and find the number that makes 10 when added to a given number. Fluency with adding and subtracting within 5 is a key goal.

  • Represent addition and subtraction with objects and drawings
  • Solve word problems within 10
  • Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 in multiple ways
  • Find the number that makes 10 for any number from 1 to 9
  • Fluently add and subtract within 5

Numbers 11 to 19

Students learn to compose and decompose numbers from 11 to 19 as ten ones and some additional ones, laying the groundwork for place value understanding in later grades.

Measurement and Data

Kindergartners describe measurable attributes like length and weight, directly compare two objects using a shared attribute, and classify objects into categories. They count objects in each category and sort categories by count.

Geometry

Students identify and name two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes regardless of size or orientation. They describe shapes using informal language, compare shapes by their attributes, build and draw shapes, and compose simple shapes to form larger ones.

StudyPug has a video lesson and practice problems for every one of these Kindergarten topics, all aligned to Alaska Mathematics Standards. Get started today and give your child a strong math foundation.
