Foundations of Journalism for Alaska High School Students

Foundations of Journalism is a high school course that introduces students to the core skills of reporting, writing, and media literacy. Alaska students in this course learn how to gather information, write news stories, evaluate sources, and understand the ethical responsibilities of journalists. These are skills that connect directly to the Alaska English standards students are already building throughout high school.

What Topics Are Covered?

The course covers a wide range of journalism fundamentals, including:

  • News writing and story structure
  • Reporting techniques and source evaluation
  • Media ethics and responsible journalism
  • Editorial writing and opinion pieces
  • Headlines, captions, and layout basics
  • Digital and multimedia journalism concepts

Each of these areas connects to broader English skills like reading comprehension, persuasive writing, and critical thinking — all tested on Alaska's AMP assessment.

How StudyPug Supports Alaska Journalism Students

StudyPug provides lessons and practice problems for every topic in Foundations of Journalism. Alaska students can work through guided explanations, practice applying journalism concepts, and revisit any lesson they find challenging. The platform is designed to support students whether they are keeping up with classwork, reviewing for a test, or exploring the subject for the first time.

Building Skills That Go Beyond the Classroom

Journalism skills — clear writing, fact-checking, ethical reasoning — are valuable in every subject and career. Alaska high school students who build a strong foundation in journalism are better prepared for advanced English coursework, college writing, and professional communication. StudyPug helps students develop those skills through consistent, structured practice aligned to what Alaska schools teach.
