Ontario Grade 2 Math Topics
Grade 2 math in Ontario covers a wide range of foundational concepts that students build on throughout elementary school. The Ontario curriculum organizes Grade 2 math into key areas including number sense, algebra, data management, geometry, and measurement.
Numbers and Number Sense
Ontario Grade 2 students learn to read, represent, compose, and decompose whole numbers up to 200. They compare and order numbers, count by 20s, 25s, and 50s, and explore what makes a number even or odd. Students also begin working with fractions through fair-sharing activities, recognizing that one third and two sixths of the same whole are equal.
Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division
Grade 2 students recall addition facts up to 20 and related subtraction facts. They use mental math strategies to add and subtract numbers up to 50, and solve problems involving whole numbers that add up to no more than 100. Multiplication is introduced as repeated equal groups, and division is explored through equal sharing of up to 12 items.
Patterns and Algebra
Students identify, create, and translate patterns using shapes and numbers. They determine pattern rules, extend patterns, and make predictions. Grade 2 also introduces symbols as variables in simple expressions and equations, and students explore equivalent relationships for whole numbers up to 100.
Data Management and Probability
Grade 2 students sort data using Venn and Carroll diagrams, collect data through observations and interviews, and display data in concrete graphs, pictographs, line plots, and bar graphs. They identify the mode of a data set and use terms like impossible, possible, and certain to describe the likelihood of events.
Geometry and Measurement
Students sort two-dimensional shapes by sides, angles, and lines of symmetry. They compose and decompose shapes and explore congruence. For measurement, Grade 2 introduces centimetres and metres, non-standard units of length, units of time including seconds, minutes, and hours, and Canadian money combinations up to $200.
Coding
Ontario Grade 2 math includes coding expectations where students solve problems by writing and executing code involving sequential and concurrent events, and describe how changes to code affect outcomes.
