Ontario Grade 1 Math Topics
Grade 1 math in Ontario covers a wide range of foundational skills. Students learn to read, represent, and compare whole numbers up to 50, and practice counting by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s. They explore fair-share problems to build early fraction understanding, including recognizing that one half equals two fourths.
Addition and Subtraction in Grade 1
Ontario Grade 1 students recall addition facts for numbers up to 10 and related subtraction facts. They use mental math strategies to add and subtract numbers that total up to 20, and solve problems with sums up to 50 using objects, diagrams, and equations.
Patterns and Algebra
Students identify and describe regularities in patterns found in everyday life. They create and translate patterns using movements, sounds, shapes, letters, and numbers, and learn to identify symbols used as variables — an early introduction to algebraic thinking.
Data and Probability
Grade 1 students sort data by one attribute, collect information through observations and interviews, and display data in concrete graphs and pictographs. They use terms like impossible, possible, and certain to describe the likelihood of events.
Geometry and Measurement
Students sort two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional objects, construct shapes with matching halves, and describe the locations of objects using positional language. They also compare objects by length, area, mass, and capacity, and identify Canadian coins up to 50¢ and bills up to $50.
