Ontario Grade 2 English Curriculum Overview

Grade 2 English in Ontario focuses on growing the foundational literacy skills children started building in Kindergarten and Grade 1. By the end of Grade 2, students are expected to read simple texts with understanding, write short pieces with correct spelling and punctuation, and communicate ideas clearly. StudyPug supports every one of these expectations with structured lessons and guided practice.

Reading and Comprehension

Ontario Grade 2 students develop reading fluency and the ability to understand what they read. Key skills include identifying the main idea, making inferences, and understanding story structure. StudyPug's lessons break these concepts down into clear, manageable steps so students can practise independently.

Phonics and Word Study

Grade 2 builds on phonics knowledge from Grade 1, introducing more complex spelling patterns, vowel combinations, and word families. Strong phonics skills help students decode new words when reading and spell accurately when writing.

Writing Skills

In Grade 2, Ontario students practise writing complete sentences, organizing ideas into short paragraphs, and using capital letters and punctuation correctly. StudyPug provides practice exercises that guide students through each step of the writing process.

Grammar and Language Conventions

Grammar topics at the Grade 2 level include nouns, verbs, adjectives, and basic sentence structure. Understanding these building blocks helps students write more clearly and read more accurately.

Preparing for Grade 3 EQAO

Ontario's EQAO literacy assessment takes place in Grade 3. The reading and writing skills covered in Grade 2 English directly prepare students for this assessment. Consistent practice in Grade 2 gives students a strong foundation going into Grade 3.
