Think Big: New Ideas and Solutions for a Better Future

You will learn how new ideas and solutions can solve community problems and help you think about a better future for everyone around you.

What Are New Ideas and Solutions?

You live in a community where problems sometimes need to be fixed. A problem is something that needs to be solved, and a solution is a way to fix it. When you think of a fresh new way to solve a problem, that is called a new idea.

Future thinkers like you look at problems and imagine what life could be like if those problems were fixed. This is called future thinking using your imagination to picture better ways for people to live together.

What Is Future Thinking?

Future thinking means imagining new and better ways to help people in your community. You do not just copy old ideas you create something that has not been tried before. Asking "What if?" is a great way to start thinking about new solutions.

Good future thinkers are curious and ask lots of thoughtful questions. They notice problems around them and think carefully about how to help. Even you, as a young person, can be a future thinker in your community!

Inventions and Innovations

An invention is something completely new that someone creates, like the telephone invented by Alexander Graham Bell in Canada. To improve means to make something better, like making a bicycle safer to ride.

Innovation means trying a fresh new approach to solve a problem or make life better for people. When you innovate, you are not just repeating the past you are creating something better for the future. A design is a plan you use to build or create something new.

Change means making something different, and it is often the result of a new idea or solution. The future is the time ahead of us, and your ideas today can shape what that future looks like.

Community Problems and How to Solve Them

A community is a group of people living together, like a town or neighbourhood. A community problem is something that affects many people living in the same area, like too much garbage or not enough shade in a schoolyard.

A need is something important for living safely, like food, water, or shelter. When you notice a need in your community, you can start thinking of new ideas to help. For example, you could start a compost bin so food scraps become useful garden soil, or plant trees to provide natural shade.

It is important to try more than one idea when solving a problem, because the first idea might not always work. Reflecting on what went wrong and trying a different approach is the heart of future thinking.

How to Share and Test Your Ideas

When you have a new idea, sharing it with others makes it even stronger. You can present your idea to your class and listen to everyone's feedback. Working together helps your community find better solutions for everyone.

To test a new idea means to try it in a small way to see if it actually works. If it does not work, you think about what went wrong and try a different idea. This is how great problem solvers think!

You can also look at what other communities in Canada have already tried. Their experiences can give you helpful ideas to try yourself. Learning from others is a smart part of future thinking.

Indigenous Knowledge and Future Thinking

Indigenous peoples in Canada including First Nations, Métis, and Inuit have thousands of years of knowledge about caring for the land. Their traditional ideas about protecting nature can help us find new solutions today. Future thinking often means combining traditional wisdom with new ideas.

For example, working with Elders to write Cree language books for a library, or teaching drum dancing to young children, are both ways of using new ideas to keep important traditions alive for the future.
