Discover How Technology Changed the Way People Work
You will learn how technology has changed the way people work, what tools workers use today, and how inventions have created new jobs while making some old jobs disappear.
How Technology Has Changed the Way People Work
Technology means tools, machines, and inventions that help people do work more easily and quickly. You can see technology all around you from the computers in your classroom to the machines that build tall buildings. Learning about Tools and Innovation helps you understand how new inventions have always changed the way people live and work.
Long ago, workers used simple hand tools to do their jobs. Today, powerful machines and computers have replaced many of those old tools, making work faster and safer for everyone.
Old Tools vs. New Technology in Canadian Workplaces
You might be surprised to learn how different work was in the past. Workers used typewriters instead of computers, rotary phones instead of smartphones, and paper maps instead of GPS apps. These older tools worked, but they were much slower than the technology people use today.
In Changing Workplaces, you can see how offices, farms, hospitals, and factories all look very different now compared to the past. For example, Canadian farmers once planted seeds by hand, but today they use large machines called tractors and planters to seed many hectares very quickly.
How Technology Created New Jobs and Removed Old Ones
When new technology is invented, it sometimes creates brand new jobs that never existed before. For example, when computers were invented, new jobs like computer programmer and website designer were created. When automobiles became common, mechanics were needed to repair them.
At the same time, some jobs disappeared because machines could do the work instead. The iceman who delivered blocks of ice to homes was no longer needed after refrigerators were invented. Telephone switchboard operators lost their jobs when automatic telephone exchanges were built. When a job is no longer needed because technology replaced it, we say that job has become obsolete.
You can explore more about this in Changing Industries and Types of Work, where you will see how whole industries have been transformed by technology.
Technology Helps Workers Do Their Jobs Better
Many Canadian workers rely on technology every single day. Nurses use electronic monitors to watch patients' health. Truck drivers use GPS to find the best routes. Weather forecasters use satellites and computers to predict storms. Builders use electric power tools and cranes to construct tall buildings safely.
Technology has also changed how workers communicate. Instead of writing letters by hand, office workers now type messages and documents on computers and send them instantly by email. You can learn more about this in Sharing Information.
Key Terms and Definitions
Technology: Technology means tools, machines, and inventions that help people do work more easily and efficiently. A computer, a tractor, and a GPS device are all examples of technology.
Automation: Automation means when machines do tasks that people used to do by themselves. For example, machines in factories can now assemble parts automatically without a person doing each step.
Obsolete: When a job or tool becomes obsolete, it means it is no longer needed because something newer has replaced it. The job of the iceman became obsolete after refrigerators were invented.
GPS (Global Positioning System): GPS is a technology that uses satellites to help people find their location and navigate from place to place. Truck drivers and pilots use GPS instead of paper maps.
Communication technology: Communication technology includes tools like computers, smartphones, and email that help people send and receive messages quickly, no matter how far apart they are.
Digital tools: Digital tools are computer-based tools and software that workers use to do their jobs. Learning to use digital tools is an important skill for workers in Canada today.
Practice What You Know About Technology and Work
You can practice thinking about technology by comparing old and new tools. Think about how a Canadian logger used a hand saw long ago but uses a powerful chainsaw today. Or how a doctor once traveled by horse to visit patients but now uses video calls to speak with patients far away.
You can also think about Types of Jobs and ask yourself: which jobs exist because of new technology, and which jobs disappeared because of it? This kind of thinking connects to Decision Making, where you learn how people and communities make choices about using new technology.
