7th Grade Math Topics in Wyoming
Wyoming 7th grade math is organized around six major areas: ratios and proportional relationships, rational number operations, expressions and equations, geometry, statistics, and probability. Each area builds directly on 6th grade foundations and prepares students for 8th grade math and algebra.
Ratios and Proportional Relationships
Students begin 7th grade math by computing unit rates with ratios of fractions — including ratios involving lengths and areas. They learn to recognize and represent proportional relationships, then apply those skills to solve multistep ratio and percent problems in real-world contexts.
Rational Number Operations
A major focus of 7th grade is extending number operations to all rational numbers. Students add, subtract, multiply, and divide positive and negative fractions and decimals. They use number lines to represent these operations and solve real-world problems using all four operations with rational numbers.
Expressions and Equations
Students apply properties of operations to add, subtract, factor, and expand linear expressions with rational coefficients. They learn how rewriting expressions reveals relationships in a problem. Students also construct and solve simple equations and inequalities using variables to represent real-world quantities.
Geometry
7th grade geometry covers scale drawings, triangle construction, cross-sections of 3D figures, circles, angle relationships, and surface area and volume. Students use formulas for the area and circumference of a circle and apply facts about supplementary, complementary, vertical, and adjacent angles to solve problems.
Statistics and Probability
Students learn how random samples can represent a population and use sample data to draw inferences. They compare two populations using measures of center and variability. Probability topics include understanding probability as a number from 0 to 1, using probability models, and finding probabilities of compound events using lists, tables, and tree diagrams.
