2nd Grade Math in Wyoming
Wyoming 2nd grade math covers a wide range of foundational skills. Students learn to add and subtract fluently within 20 and solve word problems within 100. They explore place value with three-digit numbers, skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s, and compare numbers up to 1000. All of these topics are part of the Wyoming Mathematics Standards for Grade 2.
Addition and Subtraction
A major focus of 2nd grade math is building fluency with addition and subtraction. Students solve one- and two-step word problems, add up to four two-digit numbers, and begin working with numbers up to 1000 using models and drawings. Mental math strategies — like adding or subtracting 10 or 100 from any number — are introduced and practiced throughout the year.
Place Value and Number Sense
Students learn that every three-digit number is made up of hundreds, tens, and ones. They read and write numbers to 1000 in standard form, word form, and expanded form. Comparing three-digit numbers using greater than, less than, and equal to is a key skill at this grade level.
Measurement, Data, and Geometry
2nd grade introduces measuring length using rulers, estimating in inches, feet, centimeters, and meters, and solving problems involving length. Students also learn to tell time to the nearest five minutes, work with coins and dollar bills, and read and create picture graphs and bar graphs. Geometry topics include recognizing and drawing shapes and partitioning rectangles and circles into equal shares.
