3rd Grade Math Topics in Washington State
Washington 3rd graders cover a wide range of math skills this year. The Washington State K-12 Mathematics Standards require students to build fluency in multiplication and division, understand fractions as numbers, measure area and perimeter, and work with data. StudyPug has a video lesson and practice problems for every one of these topics.
Multiplication and Division
3rd grade is when students first learn to multiply and divide. Topics include interpreting products of whole numbers, solving word problems using multiplication and division within 100, applying properties of operations, and achieving fluency with all multiplication and division facts up to 100. StudyPug breaks each concept into short, clear video lessons so students can build confidence step by step.
Fractions
Washington 3rd graders begin working with fractions as numbers. Students learn to understand unit fractions, place fractions on a number line, explain fraction equivalence, and compare fractions by reasoning about their size. These skills prepare students for the fraction work they'll encounter in 4th and 5th grade.
Place Value, Addition, and Subtraction
3rd grade continues building number sense through place value. Students round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100, fluently add and subtract within 1000, and multiply one-digit numbers by multiples of 10. These skills connect directly to the multi-digit arithmetic introduced in later grades.
Measurement and Data
- Tell and write time to the nearest minute
- Measure liquid volumes and masses using standard units
- Draw scaled picture graphs and bar graphs
- Measure lengths to the nearest half and quarter inch
Geometry and Area
Students explore area as an attribute of plane figures, count unit squares to measure area, and connect area to multiplication and addition. They also solve real-world problems involving the perimeters of polygons and partition shapes into equal parts expressed as unit fractions.
Washington State 3rd Grade Math Assessment
Washington State tests 3rd grade math through the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA). StudyPug's 3rd grade math content covers every standard assessed on the SBA, making it a useful tool for both day-to-day homework help and test preparation.
