Tennessee 2nd Grade Math: What Students Learn
Tennessee 2nd grade math covers a wide range of foundational skills that students will use throughout their education. Aligned to the Tennessee Mathematics Standards, the 2nd grade curriculum focuses on building number sense, understanding place value, and developing fluency with addition and subtraction.
Addition and Subtraction
Students learn to add and subtract within 100 and 1000, solve one- and two-step word problems, and add up to four two-digit numbers. Mental math strategies — like adding or subtracting 10 or 100 from any number — help build speed and confidence.
- Add and subtract within 20 fluently using mental strategies
- Solve word problems involving lengths using addition and subtraction within 100
- Add and subtract within 1000 using models, drawings, and place value strategies
Place Value
2nd graders explore how three-digit numbers are made up of hundreds, tens, and ones. They read, write, and compare numbers up to 1000 using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form.
- Understand hundreds, tens, and ones in three-digit numbers
- Count within 1000 and skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s
- Compare three-digit numbers using greater than, less than, and equal to
Measurement and Data
Students measure lengths using inches, feet, centimeters, and meters, and estimate lengths before measuring. They also represent data using picture graphs and bar graphs.
- Select and use appropriate measurement tools
- Estimate and measure length in standard units
- Draw bar graphs and picture graphs with up to four categories
Time and Money
2nd graders tell and write time to the nearest five minutes using analog and digital clocks. They also solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies.
Geometry
Students recognize and draw shapes with specified attributes, partition rectangles into equal squares, and divide circles and rectangles into equal shares — laying the groundwork for fractions in later grades.
StudyPug covers every one of these topics with video lessons and practice problems aligned to what Tennessee 2nd graders are taught in school.
