2nd Grade Math Topics in South Dakota
South Dakota 2nd grade math covers a wide range of foundational skills that students need before moving into 3rd grade. Every topic on this page follows South Dakota Math Standards, so what your child learns on StudyPug matches exactly what their teacher is covering in class.
Addition and Subtraction
Students in 2nd grade work on adding and subtracting within 100 and within 1000. They solve one- and two-step word problems, add up to four two-digit numbers, and learn to mentally add or subtract 10 or 100 from any number between 100 and 900. Fluency with these strategies prepares students for more complex math in later grades.
Place Value
Understanding place value is a major focus of 2nd grade math. Students learn that three-digit numbers are made of hundreds, tens, and ones. They read and write numbers to 1000 in multiple forms — base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form — and compare three-digit numbers using the symbols >, =, and <.
Measurement and Data
2nd graders measure objects using inches, feet, centimeters, and meters. They estimate lengths, compare measurements, and solve word problems involving length. Students also tell time to the nearest five minutes and solve money problems using dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. Data skills include drawing picture graphs and bar graphs with up to four categories.
Geometry
Students recognize and draw shapes with specific attributes, partition rectangles into rows and columns of equal squares, and divide circles and rectangles into equal shares. These early geometry concepts build visual and spatial reasoning that students use throughout their school years.
