2nd Grade Math Topics in South Carolina

South Carolina 2nd grade math covers a wide range of foundational skills. Students in South Carolina learn to add and subtract within 1000, understand place value with hundreds, tens, and ones, and work with money and time. These skills are built on what students learned in 1st grade and prepare them for 3rd grade math and the SC READY assessment.

Addition and Subtraction

2nd graders in South Carolina work on adding and subtracting within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems. They also develop fluency with addition and subtraction within 20 using mental strategies, and learn to add up to four two-digit numbers. Building speed and accuracy with these skills helps students move confidently into larger number work.

Place Value and Number Sense

Understanding three-digit numbers is a major focus in 2nd grade. South Carolina students learn that each digit in a number represents hundreds, tens, and ones. They count within 1000, skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s, and compare three-digit numbers using greater than, less than, or equal to. Reading and writing numbers to 1000 in multiple forms — standard, word, and expanded — is also covered.

Measurement and Data

South Carolina 2nd graders measure lengths using appropriate tools, estimate lengths in inches, feet, centimeters, and meters, and solve word problems involving measurement. Students also generate measurement data and represent it using picture graphs and bar graphs with up to four categories.

Geometry and Fractions

In geometry, 2nd graders recognize and draw shapes with specific attributes. They partition rectangles into rows and columns of equal squares and find the total. Students also partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares, building early fraction understanding.

  • Addition and subtraction within 100 and 1000
  • Place value: hundreds, tens, and ones
  • Counting and comparing three-digit numbers
  • Measurement using inches, feet, centimeters, and meters
  • Time to the nearest five minutes and money word problems
  • Picture graphs and bar graphs
  • Geometry: shapes, partitioning, and equal shares
