4th Grade Math Topics in Rhode Island

Rhode Island 4th grade math covers a wide range of topics that build the foundation for middle school mathematics. Students work through multiplication and division, multi-digit whole number operations, fractions, decimals, measurement, and geometry — all aligned to Rhode Island Math Standards.

Multiplication and Division

4th graders learn to interpret multiplication equations as comparisons and solve word problems involving multiplicative comparison. They multiply up to four-digit numbers by one-digit numbers, multiply two two-digit numbers, and find whole-number quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends.

Place Value and Number Operations

Students recognize that a digit in one place represents ten times the value of the same digit one place to its right. They read and write multi-digit whole numbers in base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form, and use place value understanding to round multi-digit whole numbers to any place. Fluent addition and subtraction using the standard algorithm is also a key skill at this grade.

Fractions and Decimals

4th grade introduces equivalent fractions, comparing fractions with different numerators and denominators, and understanding fractions as sums of unit fractions. Students also multiply a fraction by a whole number, express fractions with denominator 10 as equivalent fractions with denominator 100, use decimal notation, and compare two decimals to hundredths.

Measurement and Data

Students learn the relative sizes of measurement units within one system and solve word problems involving distances, time, liquid volumes, mass, and money. They apply area and perimeter formulas for rectangles and make line plots to display measurement data sets in fractions of a unit.

Geometry

4th grade geometry covers points, lines, line segments, rays, and angles — including right, acute, and obtuse angles, as well as perpendicular and parallel lines. Students classify two-dimensional figures, measure and sketch angles using a protractor, recognize that angle measure is additive, and identify lines of symmetry in two-dimensional figures.

How StudyPug Supports Rhode Island 4th Grade Math

StudyPug provides video lessons and practice problems for every topic in the Rhode Island 4th grade math curriculum. Each lesson is broken into short, focused segments that students can pause and replay. After watching, students can practice with problems that match what they just learned — making it easier to prepare for the RICAS assessment and keep up with class.
