Oregon Kindergarten Math Topics
Oregon Kindergarten math covers a wide range of foundational skills. Students learn to count to 100 by ones and tens, write numbers from 0 to 20, and understand what numbers represent. These early skills set the stage for all future math learning.
Number Sense and Counting
Kindergarten students in Oregon practice counting forward from any number, connecting counting to cardinality, and answering how many? questions for groups of up to 20 objects. They also compare groups and written numerals to identify which is greater, less than, or equal.
Addition and Subtraction
Students begin to understand addition and subtraction using objects, fingers, drawings, and simple equations. They solve word problems, add and subtract within 10, and work toward fluency within 5. They also explore decomposing numbers and finding pairs that make 10.
Place Value Foundations
Kindergarteners compose and decompose numbers 11 to 19 into ten ones and some additional ones, building an early understanding of place value that prepares them for Grade 1 math.
Measurement and Data
Students describe and compare measurable attributes like length and weight. They classify objects into categories, count objects in each category, and sort categories by count.
Geometry and Shapes
Kindergarten geometry covers naming and describing two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes, analyzing their similarities and differences, and composing simple shapes to form larger ones. Students also describe the positions of objects in their environment.
