Oklahoma 3rd Grade Math Topics
Oklahoma 3rd grade math covers a wide range of topics aligned to the Oklahoma Academic Standards Math. Students build on what they learned in 2nd grade and develop skills in multiplication, division, fractions, measurement, and geometry that prepare them for 4th grade math.
Multiplication and Division
A major focus of 3rd grade is understanding multiplication and division. Students learn to interpret products of whole numbers, use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems, and apply properties of operations as strategies. By the end of 3rd grade, Oklahoma students are expected to fluently multiply and divide within 100.
Fractions
3rd grade introduces fractions as numbers. Students learn to understand a fraction as part of a whole, represent fractions on a number line, explain equivalence of fractions, and compare fractions by reasoning about their size. These skills are foundational for 4th and 5th grade fraction work.
Measurement and Data
Oklahoma 3rd graders also work with measurement and data. Topics include:
- Telling and writing time to the nearest minute
- Measuring liquid volumes and masses using standard units
- Drawing scaled picture graphs and bar graphs
- Measuring lengths to halves and fourths of an inch
Geometry and Area
Students recognize area as an attribute of plane figures, measure areas by counting unit squares, relate area to multiplication and addition, and solve problems involving perimeters of polygons. They also explore how shapes in different categories can share attributes.
Preparing for the OSTP
Oklahoma tests 3rd grade math through the Oklahoma State Testing Program (OSTP). StudyPug covers every topic in the Oklahoma Academic Standards Math so students are prepared for the test and for the math ahead in 4th grade.
