Oklahoma 7th Grade ELA — What Students Learn

In 7th grade, Oklahoma students deepen their reading and writing skills across a wide range of texts and tasks. The year focuses on analyzing both literary and informational texts, constructing well-organized essays, and refining grammar and language use. All of these skills are outlined in the Oklahoma Academic Standards for English Language Arts.

Reading Skills in 7th Grade ELA

Students read fiction, poetry, drama, and nonfiction. They practice identifying main ideas, analyzing author's purpose, comparing perspectives, and drawing evidence from texts to support their ideas. Building strong reading habits now prepares students for the more complex texts they will encounter in high school.

Writing Skills in 7th Grade ELA

7th graders in Oklahoma write argumentative essays, informational pieces, and narratives. They learn to organize ideas clearly, use transitions, cite evidence, and revise their own work. These writing skills are tested on the OSTP ELA assessment and are essential for every subject across middle school.

Grammar and Vocabulary

Grammar instruction at this level covers sentence structure, punctuation, verb tenses, and word choice. Vocabulary work helps students understand academic and domain-specific words they encounter in reading and use in writing.
