Ohio Kindergarten Math: What Students Learn

Kindergarten is where the math journey begins. Ohio's Learning Standards Math sets clear expectations for what every Kindergarten student should know by the end of the year. StudyPug covers every one of those topics with video lessons and practice problems your child can access anytime.

Counting and Number Sense

Ohio Kindergarten students learn to count to 100 by ones and tens, count forward from any given number, and write numbers from 0 to 20. They connect counting to cardinality — understanding that the last number counted tells how many objects are in a group. StudyPug's video lessons break each of these skills into clear, manageable steps.

Comparing Numbers

Kindergarteners learn to identify whether one group has more, fewer, or the same number of objects as another group. They also compare two written numerals between 1 and 10. These skills lay the groundwork for place value and number relationships in later grades.

Addition and Subtraction

Ohio Kindergarten math introduces addition and subtraction using objects, fingers, drawings, and equations. Students solve word problems and add and subtract within 10. They also learn to decompose numbers into pairs, find the number that makes 10, and fluently add and subtract within 5.

  • Represent addition and subtraction with objects and drawings
  • Solve word problems within 10
  • Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 in multiple ways
  • Find the number that makes 10 when added to a given number
  • Fluently add and subtract within 5

Place Value: Numbers 11–19

Students begin building place value understanding by composing and decomposing numbers from 11 to 19 into ten ones and some additional ones. This is a foundational concept for understanding tens and ones in Grade 1.

Measurement and Data

Kindergarten students describe measurable attributes of objects like length and weight. They directly compare two objects to determine which has more or less of an attribute. They also classify objects into categories, count objects in each category, and sort categories by count.

Geometry and Shapes

Ohio Kindergarten students learn to name and describe shapes found in their environment. They identify two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes, analyze and compare shapes of different sizes and orientations, and build and draw shapes. Students also compose simple shapes to form larger shapes.

  • Name shapes regardless of size or orientation
  • Identify flat (2D) and solid (3D) shapes
  • Compare shapes using informal descriptive language
  • Build shapes from components and draw shapes
  • Compose simple shapes into larger shapes
