About 8th Grade Nevada math

Nevada follows the Nevada Academic Content Standards for Math, which organize 8th grade work into the number system, expressions and equations, functions, geometry, and statistics and probability. Students move from rational and irrational numbers through scientific notation, linear equations and systems, transformations and similarity, the Pythagorean Theorem, and bivariate data.   • The Number System: Rational and irrational numbers, decimal expansions, rational approximations of irrationals, and locating irrational numbers on a number line.
  • Expressions and Equations: Integer exponent properties, square and cube roots, scientific notation, slope and linear equations, and systems of simultaneous linear equations.
  • Functions: Defining and comparing functions, linear vs. nonlinear functions, modeling linear relationships, rate of change, initial value, and interpreting graphs qualitatively.
  • Geometry: Rotations, reflections, translations, dilations, congruence and similarity, angle relationships with parallel lines and transversals, the Pythagorean Theorem and its converse, distance in the coordinate plane, and volumes of cones, cylinders, and spheres.
  • Statistics and Probability: Scatter plots, patterns of association, fitting a linear model, interpreting slope and intercept, and two-way tables for bivariate categorical data.
