New Jersey 7th Grade ELA — What Students Learn

In 7th grade, New Jersey students develop critical reading and writing skills that form the foundation for high school English. The NJ Student Learning Standards for ELA guide what students are expected to know and be able to do by the end of the year.

  • Reading Literature: Students analyze story structure, theme, character development, and point of view in fiction and poetry.
  • Reading Informational Text: Students evaluate arguments, identify evidence, and compare multiple sources on the same topic.
  • Writing: Students write argumentative essays, informational pieces, and narratives using evidence and clear organization.
  • Grammar and Language: Students practice proper sentence structure, punctuation, word choice, and vocabulary in context.
  • Speaking and Listening: Students engage in discussions and present ideas clearly using evidence to support their points.
